講題:Luminance and colour perception influenced by melanopsin- and cone-mediated signals
摘要:A recent study has shown that the intrinsically photoreceptive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs: melanopsin cells) play an important role for encoding ambient illuminance. The stimulation of melanopsin cells is associated with many physiological and psychophysical responses induced by light, such as pupil response, sleep, migraine pain, seasonal affective disorder. Therefore it is very important to investigate how a modulation of melanopsin cells influences a luminance and colour perception. A personal computer controlled the four-primary illumination system, which allowed us to generate stimuli that independently modulate melanopsin, and three types of cones. Four different types of light-emitting diode were used. The annular ring test stimulus was superposed on the circular adaptation field using a beam splitter. A detailed description of the illumination system has previously been published (Tsujimura et al, Proc Biol Sci., 2010; Brown et al, Curr. Biol., 2012). In the experiment we measured a contrast sensitivity function, flicker detection and colour discrimination. The following two types of test stimuli were presented in the measurement of contrast sensitivity function: one varying L-, M- and S-cone stimulation without change in stimulation of melanopsin cells (cone stimulus) and another varying radiant flux of the stimuli without change in spectral composition which reduced/increased the radiant flux uniformly at all wavelengths (light flux stimulus). It was found that the two thresholds were different at low temporal frequency less than 5 Hz whereas the thresholds were almost the same at high temporal frequency. These results indicated that the melanopsin cells play an important role in visual performance. Influence of melanopsin cells on the variable visual attributes that illustrates the benefits of understanding image- and non-image forming functions will be presented.

講題:Effect of phonological structure: Eye movements reveal word learning differences between children with cochlear implants and their normal hearing peers
摘要:This study explored how phonological structure in terms of syllable configuration in Mandarin Chinese affects word learning performance in children with cochlear implants (CIs, 24–43 months old) and their age-matched peers with normal hearing (NH). After a brief exposure, children’s understanding of the novel word-object associations involving monosyllable (Du), reduplicated syllable (DuDu), and disyllable (DuDi) were measured by examining their preferential looking responses through the eye tracking. The data revealed that although children who use CI were generally less efficient at word learning in all conditions than the hearing control, they were able to correctly recognize words with reduplicated syllable. The learning advantage found for syllable doubling was interpreted in favor of child-directed structures. Taken together, this study provides evidence suggesting that the word learning performance is not only affected by auditory experience, but also by the internal configurations of the novel words.

Title: The Development of Social Cognition: How Social Group Membership Impacts Children’s Learning
Abstract:
Human beings are social beings, interacting with one another to weave the complex fabric of society. Extensive research in psychology has shown that our sensitivity to social norms emerges at a young age. Children are attentive to the social group information – information related to race and ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality, and other social groups to which we belong – in their environment, and are capable of using this information to make other decisions. The study of how people consider and use social group information across the lifespan has created a relatively new field known as social cognitive development. In my talk, I will present a series of studies investigating issues of social cognitive development in several different cultures. I discuss when children become aware of social group differences and how this awareness subsequently impacts their preferences and decisions when learning and socializing with others. I conclude my talk with the psychological insights this research offers, as well as the future directions I will take to further explore how social cognition develops over time.
